We realize that stellar wines begin in the vineyard, so we are passionate about sourcing the finest fruit for Anglim wines. Our limited case production of 3,000 to 4,000 cases a year allows us to handcraft our wines in small lots with a combination of tradition and innovation. We use 100 percent French oak, but manage the new oak percentages to create wines with a balanced style, and enough character to be cellared but enough elegance to be enjoyed now.

The vision of three motivated people helped make Calcareous Vineyard a reality. Lloyd Messer sold his wine and beer distributing business in Sioux City, Iowa, to search for the ideal growing region for his vineyard sites. He recognized Paso Robles, California, as an emerging premium wine producing area. Daughter Dana Brown sold her Iowa wine distributing business to partner with Lloyd and shape the dream with her passion and classic style. Erika Messer, Dana’s younger sister, seized the opportunity to be involved in the winery from the ground up with a hands-on approach.

(Peter Mondavi Jr. pictured)

The Peter Mondavi Family is ushering in a new era at Charles Krug Winery without losing sight of the winery's history. Charles Krug Winery was the first winery in the Napa Valley founded by the young Prussian immigrant Charles Krug in 1861. In 1943, Cesare and Rosa Mondavi bought the winery and a dramatic renaissance followed over the next decade. Wine historian Charles Sullivan wrote in Napa Wine, ‘By the early 1950's it was irrefutable that the Valley's Big Four had been augmented by one – the Charles Krug Winery’.

Cesare’s sons, Robert and Peter, assisted in the operation of the winery and in 1966, Peter became President. His industry innovations included revolutionary research on cold fermentation, enabling the production of exceptionally crisp, fruity white wines. His pioneering efforts to plant vineyards in the Carneros region, cold sterile filtration techniques and aging wine in small French oak barrels contributed to his being named one of the twelve ‘living legends’ in Napa Valley’s history by the Napa Valley Vintners Association.

Above all else, Charles Krug Winery is a family winery as the third generation illustrates. In 1999, Peter, Sr. and his sons Marc and Peter, Jr., embarked on another era at Charles Krug Winery with a nine year investment program. Over 400 of the winery's 850 vineyard acres in Napa Valley have been replanted and the winery operates with state of the art winemaking equipment.

Following an initial production of only 350 cases of Syrah in 1997, our wines have grown to include a number of varietals that are all produced with our characteristic deeply concentrated, layered, and full bodied style.

The wines are all crafted in small enough production to allow careful handcrafting with attention to capturing the grape's identity and maintaining a very high quality from wine to wine. While loosely focused on Rhone varietals, we also produce other wines such as Pinot Noir and Zinfandel out of genuine interest, and will add others as the very best fruit becomes available.

With all our wines, we work to capture a sense of elegance and finesse, but you will find no weak-kneed wines here.

“Making great wine is a passion,” says head winemaker Eileen Crane. “There is no formula. You have to be attuned to the rhythm of the grapes, the pulse of the wine.”

Under Eileen’s leadership, we make our wines with care, paying careful attention to the delicate nature of the chardonnay and pinot noir grapes we grow on our estate. Grapes are always hand picked and gently pressed. Production in our state-of-the-art facilities is limited, ensuring the highest level of craftsmanship possible.

The rediscovery of the Carmenère grape is one of the more compelling storylines in the emergence of Chile not only as a region for good value wines, but for wines of world-class quality. The grape has long been neglected in Bordeaux, and was generally thought to be on the wane world-wide. Until recent years, Carmenère had been mislabeled as Merlot in the vineyards of Chile; not until diligent genetic research uncovered its true identity did this singular grape begin to flourish. Today, much as Malbec has become Argentina’s calling card, Chile is in a unique position to celebrate the virtues of Carmenère.

(Therese and Dan Martin)

Our dream of owning a winery began with a shared passion for great wine, a wonderful growing environment, and the joy of sharing the experience with friends and family. In 1993, after years of enjoying winetasting and buying, we decided to experience the winemaking process for ourselves. As it turns out, our 17 acres in the southern tip of the Santa Cruz Mountains provided the perfect microclimate for growing Cabernet Sauvignon — warm days and cool nights.

Our first pass at winemaking started in 1997 and our output has grown with our passion ever since. In 2002, we had our first commercial crush of 625 cases. In 2003, we built a small building and increased our production to 2000 cases. By 2004, we had increased our production to 3500 cases, and again had friends and family celebrating in the long days of harvest and winemaking. We have recently completed a new winery and produce several award-winning red varieties.

We've also recently had small production releases of special wines, usually reserved for our Wine Club members that include a Zinfandel, a Sauvignon/Sémillon Bordeaux-style blend and a crisp and delicious Chardonnay. Our primary goal in our business is to continue to enjoy the great wine — and special friendships — that are the true rewards of the winemaking experience.

The Midlife Crisis Winery is a very small family operation. It is owned and operated by just the two of us, Kevin and Jill Mittan. We wear many hats at the winery. We get to be the winemakers, the cellar workers, the bottling line, and the marketing mavens (like what we do so far?) and often fulfill that ever popular job description other duties as required. The winery and/or vineyard have been in the planning stages for over a decade and have gone through many incarnations in those ten years (Talk to our real estate agent in Paso if you have any doubts about how many plans and change in plans two people can make!)

So how did we finally decide to put our money where our mouths are and actually start the winery (and soon the vineyard)? Well, it would be wonderful and inspiring for us to try to fill this page with serious, important sounding reasons for why we decided to do this. We played with talking about a passion to make serious wine (which we have) or a desire to express the essence of terrior (what does that mean really?) or a lifelong involvement with agriculture or a family history of winemaking (which we sure wish we had) or some other great important reason that we could not quite come up with.

Most were turn-arounds, in industries as diverse as air freight, men’s toiletries, candy manufacturing, military electronics, medical devices, garage door openers, electrical-utility cable, sunglasses, and school supplies, to name a few. The common theme in all of them was the need to find a new management team and motivate them to develop the company’s full potential.

Today, almost 150,000 vines occupy the sixteen different vineyard blocks, situated in the hills and canyons of the estate's rough terrain. The vineyards, with their varying soils, elevations, and microclimates, produce grapes uniquely expressive of their site. Taken together, they offer the winemaker a painter's palette of complex, flavorful hues from which to choose.

At the 2006 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, San Sa Chun added to it's collection of awards with a bronze medal. These events are some of the largest and most respected International wine competitions in America.

San Sa Chun is rice wine brewed with corn starch and haws. San Sa is the Korean word for Hawthorn, which are various trees or shrubs having clusters of white or pinkish flowers and reddish fruits. Raw is the fruit of the Hawthorn, resembles tiny apples and any species of the genus Crataegus of the Rosaceae (Rose family).

The blend of rice, corn starch, and haws provides you with a unique and refreshing taste unlike most rice wines. The natural sugars in the fruit provide a subtle sweetness to the taste.

In the late 1980s, I began searching California for a place to farm vineyards. I immediately found a home in the Central Coast, and soon discovered that the climate and soils were well suited for the kind of wines I wanted to make. Now, years later, I remain devoted to the region and the potential of the wines produced here."
- Nebil "Bilo" Zarif

Inspired by the relaxed, friendly lifestyle enjoyed throughout California's serene coastal towns, these wines best reflect the merits of the diverse growing regions that span from Santa Barbara to Monterey Counties. The wines are approachable in both price and style, exhibiting excellent varietal character with a Central Coast flavor profile that is suitable to a wide variety of foods. The wines of the Central Coast Collection are not just winning awards, but are winning friends one glass at a time.

Our Summerland reserve tier is dedicated to single-vineyard bottlings from top vineyards in the region. Each of these wines expresses the distinctive terroir of an individual vineyard. Once a vineyard is selected, close contact is kept with the growers throughout the year to maintain the highest quality and desired yields for the fruit we harvest. All the wines in this line are aged in small French oak barrels and subject only to traditional wine- making techniques. These selections are both limited and exquisite.
